The Diary of Anne Frank

February 7 - 16, 2025

In this transcendently powerful new adaptation by Wendy Kesselman, Anne Frank emerges from history a living, lyrical, intensely gifted young girl who confronts her rapidly changing life and the increasing horror of her time with astonishing honesty, wit and determination. An impassioned drama about the lives of eight people hiding from the Nazis in a concealed storage attic, The Diary of Anne Frankcaptures the claustrophobic realities of their daily existence – their fear, their hope, their laughter, their grief.

Each day of these two dark years, Anne’s voice shines through: “When I write, I shake off all my cares. But I want to achieve more than that. I want to be useful and bring enjoyment to all people, even those I’ve never met. I want to go on living even after my death!” This is a new adaptation for a new generation.

Character Breakdown

All ages are just suggested and can be a little younger or older depending on the auditioners that attend.

Anne Frank (Female Teenager-Twenties): Anne is the youngest member of the Frank family and is very energetic and imaginative. She has moments where the fear of her situation get to her but overall, she is an optimistic and light-hearted child who has an active imagination. She is creative and shows this through writing in her diary, making up games, and trying to keep everyone entertained. She is also very bold and chatty with no fear of saying what is on her mind.

Otto Frank (Male Adult): Otto is the father of Anne and Margot and husband of Edith. He is a businessman with great leadership qualities and is very resourceful. He is very loving, patient, and understanding while trying to be the peacemaker in the living situation they end up in. He has a lot of fear but tries to keep up everyone’s spirits.

Edith Frank (Female Adult): Edith is the mother of Anne and Margot and wife of Otto. She is very maternal in everything she does and is always thinking about her children and their well being. She is extremely protective of her family and devoted to her husband. She is mostly quiet and reserved with a high degree of anxiety with her families safety on the line.

Margot Frank (Female Teenager-Twenties): Margot is the oldest daughter of Otto and Edith as well as sister to Anne. She is very quiet and reserved like her mother while being patient like her father. She has a very mature and caring nature to her. She is not as creative as Anne but she does support Anne’s ideas and plays with Anne often. She is a strict rule follower who is extremely obedient.

Peter Van Daan (Male Teenager-Twenties): Peter is the son of Petronella and Putti Van Daan as well as Anne’s eventual love interest. He is a very introverted boy who loves his cat as well as his privacy. He is nerdy and caring but he is very anxious at the living situation. He is hesitant and is Anne’s opposite. He is a realist and believes that he will be stuck in the attic forever or taken away but he will not be free.

Petronella Van Daan (Female Adult): Petronella is the mother of Peter and the wife of Putti. She is a high-class and extravagant lady who admires and appreciates the more wealthy and privileged parts of society. She is highly materialistic and gossipy. While being a socialite, she is also very loving, maternal, and warm.

Putti Van Daan (Male Adult): Putti is the father of Peter and husband of Petronella. He is a chain-smoking businessman who is dealing with the absence of his cigarettes very poorly. Because of his lack of cigarettes, he tends to be hot-tempered as well as short-tempered. He is very judgemental of Peter and disapproves of Peter’s cat. He is very energetic and noisy while trying to stay positive in this time of despair.

Jan Dussel (Male Adult): He is a dentist who is an acquaintance of the Franks. He is the last one to enter the attic after both families have been established. He is extremely skittish and cranky. He is pessimistic and uptight. He has a very short temper when it comes to Anne and her antics and she also has a lot of disdain for him as well. He continues his dentistry with the two families in the attic.

Mr. Kraler (Male Adult): He is a former employee of Mr. Frank who is providing the attic and protection for the families. The families live in an attic above his business. He is a caring and generous person. He is putting himself in danger with the Nazis to give these families a chance to live. He is very intelligent and provides the families with as much as he possibly can given the situation. He also gives them updates and reports of anything that is going on in the outside world.

Miep Gies (Female Any Age But Teenager): She is a former secretary in Mr. Frank’s office. She is helping to protect and bring the family information, food, and supplies like Mr. Kraler. She is very caring and generous. She gives everything she possibly can to the families while risking her life to do so. She is a selfless and friendly face in the families’ times of despair.

Nazi Officers (Any Age and Gender): These are merciless and cold Nazis who come in at the end of the play to drag out the families and bring them to the concentration camps.
